What I look for in a Person
I used to think that what I cared about most was accurate theology. And by theology I mean a structurally integredous world view. Now don’t get me wrong, I still place great weight and value upon a proper estimate of God in all His relating; for it is through this that the whole of ones life is filtered. But when I said ‘accurate theology’, subtly implied within that included the ability to articulate that theology. Herein lies the problem. Not all are orators or teachers; not even decent communicators. Not all rendezvous with truth in the pages of Moltmanns’ The Crucified God. Others have a more intuitive approach to life. Some are more pastorally bent and they think more in the order of principals for their friends than bullet points for their research papers. These people may have tendency to be disinterested in debate but they love God just as well and who’s to claim accuracy on that kind of measurement. To judge quality of relationship based on eloquence is an exercise in ignominy. The whole of ones person is a reflection of God’s guinius, not just what can be verbal processed. There is great beauty in humor and personality. And especially important, is his or her assorted reactions to situations. I find then that I care about response. How does one recoil under pressure? It is there, that what is you, is rung out; for good or for bad.

“I find, then, that I care about response.” That is a relief, of course, to the intuitive among us, to those of us who would not be capapble, let alone inclined, to write a book about the hypostatic union!
Jesus said what comes out of a man is what defiles Him. What have I filed in my heart, what have I allowed to take root and grow?Eventually it will come out of my mouth, blessing or defiling. What I say in church is so much less telling than what I say when I step on a Lego at three in the morning, with bare feet.
